Unpopular opinion but I prefer Clueless to Mean Girls…I don’t mean to be a traitor to my generation and all (if you agree with me….you’ll get that quote) but that’s that. About midway through the film Cher is held at gunpoint and told to “get on the ground” to which she responds by saying “oh no, this is an Alaia”. What is an Alaia?! I hear you ask…well in the words of Cher Horowitz “it’s like a totally important designer” and I could not agree more.
Tragically Azzedine Alaïa passed away last November and his past work is now on display at The Design Museum in central London; I went on my birthday and fell head over heels in love.
Everything from the way the pieces are displayed to the aesthetics of the exhibition to the cool toned lighting and black and white films available to watch with uniform headphones behind a false wall (one to show a film interviewing friends and colleges about AA’s work (Naomi Campbell and Grace Coddington included) to another showcasing some of his finest catwalks and fashion films) I loved the whole thing and found it incredibly inspiring.
Alaia’s work is detailed, exquisite and beautiful. Each piece has a clear woman wearing it and the tailoring is done to perfection (a point reiterated during several inches….his runways were as a minimum 2 hours late as he could not let imperfect pieces down the catwalk and therefore would be making alterations down to the final second). If you’re able to visit the design museum whilst the exhibition is on then please please do, you won’t be disappointed but for those that can’t but still wish to be inspired by the beautiful craftsmanship, I’ve included some photographs I took on the day. Enjoy!
