Summer reads: Eligible

Hiya, time for a book review. I am a huge HUGE Jane Austen fan (Classic brit.) my 3 faves being; Sense & sensibility, Emma & Pride and prejudice. Eligible is the modern version of the latter. Curtis Sittenfeld re writes the classic bringing it into the 21st century.

I was skeptical when I started this book and it took me a while to get into it as I wasn’t sure if it would live up to the original but not only was it a great take on a classic, it actually helped me understand the story slightly better than before (the last time I read the book I was about 13).

If you’re unfamiliar with the plot line, the story is based on the Bennet family, which consists of 5 daughters, all unmarried much to their mothers horror. The rest of the story is then the development of these characters and their subsequent romantic plot lines.

I found this book witty, charming and fresh (as in refreshing not ‘freaky freaky fresh’) a perfect summer read (as you can tell, I took this book down to the pool one too many times…it is severely sun-damaged) with both humour and many insightful moments that made me want to try Sittenfeld’s other books; Prep, American Wife and Sisterland.

What summer books have you been loving lately?

Xx

I always think it’s good to get a different perspective on literature as it shows you sides to the story you may not have realised before! But the classics are obviously great too xx
